Ready-Made BigData and AI Testbeds That Help Banks and Insurers Innovate Faster

digitalPilotedTRL 7

Imagine you run a bank and want to test a new fraud detection system, but you can't experiment on real customer data without breaking privacy rules. INFINITECH built 9 secure testing environments — like sandboxes where fintech companies can safely try out their AI tools with realistic data. They also created compliance tools so banks can innovate without tripping over regulations like PSD2 or anti-money-laundering rules. The whole setup was tested across 14 real-world pilots covering everything from credit risk to crop insurance.

The business problem

What needed solving

Banks and insurers want to use AI, BigData, and IoT to build better products — but they cannot safely test new solutions without risking regulatory violations or exposing customer data. FinTech startups face the same wall from the other side: they lack access to realistic testing environments and compliance infrastructure. The result is slower innovation and higher costs for everyone in the financial services chain.

The solution

What was built

The project delivered 9 configurable testbeds and sandboxes with Open APIs, a blockchain infrastructure with smart contracts and encrypted data querying, streaming analytics engines, regulatory compliance tools for PSD2 and anti-money-laundering, a data management workbench, AI algorithm libraries, and a Virtualized Digital Innovation Hub — all validated through 14 pilots and documented across 111 deliverables.

Who can put this to work

Banking and Financial Services
enterprise
Target: Retail or commercial bank with digital transformation goals

If you are a bank struggling to test new AI-driven services like credit risk scoring or fraud detection without risking regulatory violations — this project built 9 configurable testbeds with built-in compliance tools for PSD2 and anti-money-laundering. The sandboxes let you validate new solutions using anonymized data before going live. The system was tested across 14 real-world pilots with 58 consortium partners.

Insurance
enterprise
Target: Insurance company exploring usage-based or parametric products

If you are an insurer looking to launch usage-based or agro-insurance products but lack the IoT data infrastructure and analytics tools — INFINITECH developed streaming analytics engines and AI algorithm libraries specifically validated for insurance use cases. Their testbed includes real-time data processing that handles both structured and unstructured data from IoT sensors. The project validated these tools with insurance-specific pilots across 16 countries.

FinTech and InsurTech
SME
Target: FinTech startup needing a sandbox to validate products

If you are a FinTech or InsurTech startup that needs a safe environment to build and test your product before approaching regulated institutions — INFINITECH created dedicated sandboxes for innovators with Open APIs and training datasets. Their Virtualized Digital Innovation Hub gives you access to blockchain infrastructure, analytics tools, and regulatory compliance checking. The platform was designed to lower barriers for 21 SMEs already in the consortium.

Frequently asked

Quick answers

What would it cost to access the INFINITECH testbeds or sandbox tools?

The project has not published public pricing for its tools. Since this was an EU-funded Innovation Action, some components may be available as open-source or through the project's market platform. Contact the coordinator GFT Italia SRL to discuss licensing or access terms.

Can these tools handle the data volumes of a large European bank?

The project specifically built Hybrid Transactional/Analytics Processing (HTAP) that integrates OLAP and OLTP workloads, plus automatic parallelization of data streams. These were validated in 14 pilots with major financial institutions across 16 countries, suggesting enterprise-grade scalability.

Who owns the IP and how is it licensed?

IP is distributed across 58 consortium partners coordinated by GFT Italia SRL. With 42 industry partners and 21 SMEs involved, licensing terms likely vary by component. The project established a market platform for accessing its solutions, which may be the primary channel for commercial licensing.

Does this meet current EU financial regulations?

Yes — regulatory compliance was a core design goal. The project built dedicated tools for PSD2, 4th Anti-Money Laundering Directive, MiFID II, and eIDAS integration. Data governance features include anonymization and consent mechanisms built into the blockchain infrastructure.

Is this still actively maintained after the project ended?

The project closed in March 2023. The Virtualized Digital Innovation Hub and market platform were designed to outlive the project. Based on available project data, check the project website at infinitech-h2020.eu for current status of tools and support.

How easily can these tools integrate with our existing banking systems?

The project emphasized interoperability and Open APIs across all 9 testbeds. The Data Management Workbench provides standardized API access, and the polyglot persistence layer handles multiple data formats. Integration was validated with incumbent organizations through dedicated testbed sandboxes.

Consortium

Who built it

INFINITECH has one of the largest consortiums in Horizon 2020 fintech projects with 58 partners from 16 countries. The 72% industry ratio (42 out of 58 partners) signals strong commercial intent — this was not an academic exercise. The coordinator GFT Italia SRL is a well-known IT services company specializing in banking technology. With 21 SMEs onboard, the project had direct exposure to startup innovation needs alongside enterprise requirements. The mix of 6 universities and 6 research organizations provided the scientific backbone, but the overwhelming industry presence means these tools were shaped by real market demands from day one.

How to reach the team
