Benchmark Your Big Data Tools Against Real Business Results and ROI

digitalTestedTRL 6

Imagine you just spent a fortune on big data software, but you have no idea if it's actually making your company more money. That's like buying a gym membership and never stepping on a scale. DataBench built a toolbox that connects the technical performance of your big data tools directly to your business outcomes — revenue, efficiency, planning. So instead of guessing whether your data investment pays off, you can actually measure it and compare tools side by side.

The business problem

What needed solving

Companies invest heavily in big data technologies but lack objective, evidence-based methods to measure whether those investments actually improve business performance or deliver return on investment. When multiple benchmarking tools exist for the same task, there is no reliable way to compare them or link their technical scores to real economic outcomes.

The solution

What was built

The project built the DataBench Toolbox (delivered in alpha and beta versions) — a software platform that lets users benchmark big data technologies against business-relevant metrics, reuse existing benchmarks, and run end-to-end evaluation scenarios. A total of 24 deliverables were produced across the project.

Who can put this to work

Financial Services
enterprise
Target: Mid-to-large banks or insurance firms with multiple big data platforms

If you are a financial institution running several big data analytics platforms for risk modeling and fraud detection — this project developed the DataBench Toolbox that benchmarks your tools against actual business performance metrics. Instead of relying on vendor claims, you can measure which platform delivers better results for your specific economic planning needs. The consortium of 10 partners across 8 countries validated this approach with industry and research input.

Retail & E-Commerce
mid-size
Target: Online retailers using big data for customer analytics and demand forecasting

If you are a retailer investing in big data tools for demand forecasting and personalization but cannot tell if they actually improve sales — this project built a benchmarking platform that connects technical tool performance to business outcomes like revenue impact. The toolbox supports reusing existing benchmarks and running end-to-end evaluation scenarios, so you can compare tools before committing budgets.

Manufacturing & Supply Chain
enterprise
Target: Manufacturers using big data for production optimization and predictive maintenance

If you are a manufacturer that deployed big data analytics for predictive maintenance or quality control but cannot quantify the business return — DataBench created a toolbox that maps technical benchmark results to your economic processes. With 5 industry partners contributing to its design, the tool was built to address real industrial needs, not just academic metrics.

Frequently asked

Quick answers

What would it cost to use the DataBench Toolbox?

Based on available project data, the DataBench Toolbox was developed as an open benchmarking platform under EU public funding (RIA scheme). The project website at databench.eu may have current access information. Since the project ended in 2020, licensing or commercial terms would need to be confirmed with the coordinator.

Can this work at industrial scale with our existing data infrastructure?

The toolbox was designed for industrial and research community users, with 5 industry partners in the 10-partner consortium contributing to requirements. The beta version included end-to-end scenario evaluation capability, suggesting it was built to handle realistic enterprise workflows rather than toy examples.

What about intellectual property and licensing?

As a publicly funded Research and Innovation Action, results typically follow EU open access principles. The specific IP arrangements among the 10 consortium partners would need to be clarified with the coordinator IDC Italia SRL. The toolbox components may be available under open-source or permissive licensing.

How does this compare to existing benchmarking solutions?

The project was specifically designed to address gaps in existing big data benchmarking tools — particularly the missing link between technical performance metrics and actual business outcomes. DataBench investigated existing tools, identified gaps, and built a robust set of metrics to compare results across different benchmarking platforms.

Is this still maintained after the project ended in 2020?

The project closed at end of 2020. Based on available project data, the consortium had strong ties to the Big Data Value PPP community. Current status of toolbox maintenance and updates should be verified through the project website at databench.eu or by contacting the coordinator.

Does this meet any industry standards or regulatory requirements?

Based on available project data, DataBench was connected to the Big Data Value contractual PPP and interacted with related ICT14 and ICT15 EU projects. While not a regulatory compliance tool itself, its evidence-based benchmarking approach can support due diligence and procurement justification processes.

Consortium

Who built it

The DataBench consortium brings together 10 partners from 8 European countries (Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, UK), led by IDC Italia — a subsidiary of IDC, one of the world's leading technology market research firms. The 50% industry ratio (5 industry partners alongside 2 universities and 3 research organizations) signals that this was built with commercial applicability in mind, not as a purely academic exercise. Having IDC as coordinator adds credibility for enterprise adoption, as they already have deep relationships with technology buyers and vendors worldwide.

How to reach the team

IDC Italia SRL (Italy) — a major technology research and advisory firm. Contact through their corporate channels or the project website.
