AudioCommons built smart search and tagging tools that automatically describe what audio sounds like (is it bright? dark? warm?) so creative professionals can find exactly the right sound in seconds. What needed solving

Creative industries — from game studios to film producers — spend significant time and money sourcing, licensing, and managing audio content. Meanwhile, millions of free Creative Commons audio files exist online but are practically unusable because they lack proper descriptions and cannot be easily searched or integrated into professional workflows. The result is wasted money on commercial libraries and wasted free content that nobody can find.

What was built

The project built 6 working demo prototypes: automatic timbral characterisation tools for non-musical audio (sound effects, ambient sounds), automatic semantic description tools for music pieces, and automatic semantic description tools for music samples. Each tool went through two iterations, with second versions improved after user evaluation. In total, 44 deliverables were produced covering the full ecosystem from content tagging to rights management.
